BusinessWeek Review of 2010 Corvette Grand Sport

Bloomberg BusinessWeek recently had the opportunity to drive the 2010 Corvette Grand Sport:

My Rule No. 1 when it comes to car reviewing: Any excuse to drive a Corvette.

Following that rule put me behind the wheel of a 2010 Corvette Grand Sport just as the first days of spring arrived in hilly northeast Pennsylvania. I wasn't disappointed. Most of the time I was totally exhilarated.

The Grand Sport, a new version of the iconic two-seater Chevy sports car, splits the difference between the regular Corvette and the powerful, much more expensive Z06. Basically, the GS replaces the Z51 performance package that used to be an option on the base-model Corvette.

The GS has the same 6.2-liter, 430-hp V8 found in the regular Corvette, and is offered as either a coupe or a convertible. Either way, it includes a number of Z06-style upgrades, among them bigger brakes, a sport-tuned suspension, wider front and rear fenders, and a front splitter and tall rear spoiler, as well as fender stripes and vents and unique alloy wheels. These aren't all cosmetic enhancements. Many of them improve the car's aerodynamics and handling so that it hugs the road even more tenaciously than a regular Corvette.

2011 Corvette Z06 Auctioned at Barrett-Jackson

The first 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Carbon Edition sold this weekend at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Florida:

The car that takes the crown, however, as the 2010 Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach collector car event's highest-selling car, is Lot No. 678, the 2011 Chevy Corvette Z06 Carbon, with a hammer price of a whopping $270,000.

The first of a limited run of 500, the Corvette Z06 Carbon is a special edition Corvette which draws from 50 years of Le Mans racing heritage to combine the superlative handling attributes of the ZR1 chassis with the lightweight LS7 Z06 engine. Thus, it is considered to be the most track-ready Corvette yet produced. Available in either Inferno Orange Metallic or Supersonic Blue, the Z06 Carbon also sports several carbon-fiber aerodynamic pieces, including a front splitter, side spoilers, and a raised hood. The winning bidder will be able to order the car personalized to their choice of color, engine, transmission, and other factory-installed equipment, as well as have the chance to travel to GM's Wixom Performance Build Center to witness the LS7 engine being built, and finally receive delivery at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY.

First 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition Heads to Barrett-Jackson

The first 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition coupe will be auctioned at Barrett-Jackson in Palm Beach on April 3.  It is one of only 500 to be produced.

The first of 500 retail 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition coupes will go to the highest bidder at Barrett-Jackson in Palm Beach, Fla., on April 3.

The winning bidder will also be given the unique opportunity to tour GM’s Performance Build Center in Wixom, Mich., home of the hand-built LS7 and LS9 engines found in the Z06 and ZR1 respectively. The winner will also have the opportunity to watch the car going down the line at the famed Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, Ky.

“The Corvette Z06 Carbon will surely be an instant collectible,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. Vice President, Chevrolet Marketing. “For that reason, we see Barrett-Jackson as the premiere venue to sell the first retail Z06 Carbon.”

The Corvette Z06 Carbon was designed as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of Corvette’s first race in the 24 Hours of LeMans. As such, it continues the technology transfer between the production Corvette and racing.
